Preclinical biotech developing a thiomer biopolymers platform for continuous ophthalmic drug delivery using an insert, focused on eye diseases.
Founded in 2020 by Jean Garrec and Jean Cuiné, BIOPHTA is a preclinical biotechnology company developing a thiomer biopolymer platform for continuous ophthalmic drug delivery. The technology utilizes a 3-millimeter insert placed directly on the eye surface to target major diseases, addressing a nearly 9 billion dollar glaucoma market, a nearly 10 billion dollar macular edema market, and dry eye syndrome affecting 150 million patients. Advancing toward the clinical stage following extensive preclinical research, the organization plans to initiate Phase 1 trials for its primary glaucoma program in 2025 and its secondary macular edema program in 2026. To support this clinical progression, the enterprise raised six and a half million euros in a June 2024 seed funding round. This investment was led by UI Investissement, Elaia, and GO Capital, alongside strategic participation from Unither Pharmaceuticals and HTL Biotechnology.
