Licenses carbon removal technology for cement-free concrete, replacing cement with steel slag for carbon-negative products.
Founded in 2016 by Mehrdad Mahoutian and Chris Stern, Quebec-based Carbicrete develops patented carbon removal technology replacing cement in concrete with steel slag and injected carbon dioxide. This proprietary process permanently sequesters the injected gas to provide strength, enabling the production of cement-free, carbon-negative concrete blocks without requiring heat or emitting carbon dioxide during manufacturing. The company licenses its technology and oversees plant retrofits for concrete producers, launching commercial products with regional hardscape manufacturers like Patio Drummond and Canal Block. Carbicrete has also signed European pilot agreements with Saint-Gobain subsidiary POINT P, while securing backing from industrial investors such as Innovobot and Harsco. Now led by CEO Jacob Homiller, the enterprise operates with over fifty employees and has received two million one hundred thousand dollars from Sustainable Development Technology Canada to support facility retrofits.
