Sam Bankman-Fried is the former CEO of the defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX and is currently incarcerated at FCI Mendota in the United States. Before his 2023 conviction on seven felony counts of wire fraud, he built FTX into a major digital asset platform that reached a $32 billion valuation in 2021 and served over one million users. He previously co-founded the quantitative trading firm Alameda Research in 2017 alongside Caroline Ellison, following a three-year tenure as a trader at Jane Street Capital. A 2014 physics graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024 following the collapse of his enterprises. His current focus remains on his ongoing legal appeals while the FTX bankruptcy estate executes a court-approved plan projecting a 98 percent recovery for former creditors.
