Tomas Barreto is the Operating Partner of Engineering at Kleiner Perkins, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He previously served as the fifth engineer and eventually Vice President of Engineering at Box, scaling the company through its initial public offering and past $500 million in revenue while leading teams of over 150 employees. Barreto then became the first Vice President of Engineering at Checkr, expanding the department from 25 to more than 100 personnel. He later co-founded the engineering effectiveness startup Okay, serving as Chief Technology Officer until its acquisition by Stripe in 2023. As an advisor, he has consulted for over 20 technology companies, including Loom, Oura, and Modern Treasury. His current focus centers on mentoring technical founders and advising venture-backed portfolio companies on talent acquisition, organizational scaling, and engineering velocity.
