Torsten Reil

Torsten Reil is a General Partner at Playground Global, a deep tech venture capital firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He previously earned a PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of Oxford before founding NaturalMotion in 2001, an animation technology company that Zynga acquired for $527 million in 2014. In 2016, Reil launched Evolution AI, an enterprise machine learning platform that Appen subsequently purchased for over $100 million in 2021. At Playground Global, which manages more than $1 billion in assets, he helped raise a $475 million fourth fund in 2023 to back early-stage deep tech startups. His venture investment portfolio includes prominent technology companies such as UiPath, Graphcore, Wayve, and Recursion Pharmaceuticals. Reil currently focuses on bridging advanced artificial intelligence research with commercial applications across robotics, biotechnology, and autonomous systems.
