Walter Gilbert

Walter Gilbert is a Managing Director at BioVentures Investors based in Wellesley, Massachusetts. He previously served as the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and received the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing rapid DNA sequencing methods. Transitioning into the biotechnology industry, he co-founded Biogen in 1978, serving as CEO and Chairman from 1981 to 1985 while leading its 1983 initial public offering. Gilbert subsequently co-founded multiple life sciences companies, serving as Vice-Chairman of Myriad Genetics and Chairman of Paratek Pharmaceuticals until 2014, alongside co-founding Memory Pharmaceuticals before its acquisition by Roche. At BioVentures Investors, he manages over $150 million across four funds that have completed 28 transactions and 20 exits. His current focus centers on MedTech venture capital investments, specifically targeting early-stage innovation across the biotechnology, medical device, and diagnostics sectors.
