The Insuresilience Investment Fund

The Insuresilience Investment Fund is an investment vehicle designed to enhance climate change adaptation by expanding access to insurance in developing nations. The fund primarily deploys private debt and private equity across its sub-funds, with a strategic emphasis on technology to boost the affordability and accessibility of climate-related insurance products. It invests in entities providing innovative solutions, including those in flood forecasting, extreme weather risk modeling, and agricultural technology, to protect vulnerable populations.

The fund was established by KfW, the German Development Bank, acting on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Its initial phase commenced in July 2017, leading to the launch of InsuResilience Investment Fund Private Equity II in September 2022 by KfW and BlueOrchard. The founding insight centered on mitigating the impact of extreme weather events on micro, small, and medium enterprises and low-income households through tailored insurance mechanisms.

The fund’s ultimate beneficiaries are micro, small, and medium enterprises, low-income households, and smallholder farmers in emerging markets. Its core mission is to foster greater resilience against climate risks by integrating insurance into financial ecosystems, thus safeguarding livelihoods and enabling economic stability in regions disproportionately affected by environmental shifts. The fund continues to support solutions that strengthen climate adaptation for these communities globally.
