Flagship Ventures

Flagship Ventures, now operating as Flagship Pioneering, is a venture creation firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that invents and builds life sciences and sustainability companies from the ground up. Operating through its proprietary VentureLabs innovation foundry, the firm acts as a principal founder and financier that self-funds the conception and early development of its own internal ideas rather than backing existing startups. The organization has created over 100 scientific ventures that have generated more than $100 billion in aggregate market value, secured thousands of patents, and advanced over 50 drugs into clinical development. Its portfolio of bioplatform companies notably includes the publicly traded biotechnology corporation Moderna, alongside strategic leadership from key industry figures like managing partner Doug Cole. Flagship Ventures was initially conceived in 1999 and officially launched in 2000 by founder Noubar Afeyan.
